Permanent exhibition

In the footsteps of our city

With your admission to the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland alone, you immerse yourself in a piece of Hof's city history. Housed in the historic hospital building, whose origins date back to the 13th century, the museum's location is one of the oldest building complexes still standing in the city. On several floors, you can follow the traces of Hof's city and cultural history - and experience the architectural beauty of the building up close. In the rooms of the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland we make history tangible and experienceable for you.

Use our free audio guide to learn exciting facts about the favorite objects of Hof schoolchildren.

Understand history

In the permanent exhibition of the museum you will get interesting and informative insights into the different aspects of the history of Hof. Using archaeological finds, objects from the early modern period and with the help of two large city models, you can trace the development of our city. Exhibits such as printing presses, looms and yarn machines give you a vivid impression of Hof's technical and textile history. And typical products of the region made of copper, tin or porcelain give a vivid picture of the local crafts and trades. In the extensive natural history department you will learn about the flora and fauna of our region.

Life in Biedermeier

... and in the postwar years

Nothing reflects Hof's eventful history better than the period between the cozy Biedermeier era, the up-and-coming Gründerjahre years and the post-war period. Within just a few decades, Hof experienced the harsh transition from a cosmopolitan industrial city in the Gründerzeit to a border post sealed off to the east after the Second World War - and a safe haven for refugees. The permanent exhibition of the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland is particularly dedicated to this historical field of tension.

In several showrooms on the cultural history of our city, you will learn how people lived and lived in Hof during the Biedermeier period in the first half of the 19th century and during the Gründerjahre (1870-1900). Furniture, instruments, accessories and portraits of Hof families bring the lifestyle of the time to life. The reconstruction of a classroom on the upper floor of the museum is also interesting. Take a seat in one of the school desks and feel what "school" meant not so long ago.

The "Refugees and Displaced Persons in Hof" section focuses on Hof's role as a port of call and new home for thousands of refugees and displaced persons after World War II. In addition to information panels and photographs, original items from the post-war years and the stories associated with them in particular convey a very personal picture of the fate and living situation of those affected at the time.
