Sigmundsgraben: Complete closure and roadworks hotline

Depending on weather conditions, the full closure of the Sigmundsgraben will last until the 4th quarter of 2025.

From Monday, 18 August, 7 a.m., the next construction phase of Stadtwerke Hof's currently largest single district heating project will begin at Sigmundsgraben. The work will require a full closure of the Sigmundsgraben, which - depending on the weather - will last until the 4th quarter of 2025. Completion of the entire project is no longer possible this year. The closure of the Sigmundsgraben will be lifted during the weather-related construction break.

The city of Hof is appealing to all road users to avoid the construction site as far as possible.

The Sigmundsgraben will be completely closed - on both sides. For around four weeks during the school holidays, Lessingstraße will only be passable in the direction of the city centre, while out of town towards Marktkauf will be closed. From 15 September, only Sigmundsgraben will be closed. It will still be possible to turn from Lessingstraße into Schützenweg (Scherdelsberg) during the first construction phase. Conversely, it will only be possible to turn right from Schützenweg towards the city centre and access to Unterkotzauer Weg will only be possible via Seligenweg or Schlossweg. The necessary roadworks traffic lights will be active from Monday. An overview can be found in the maps below.

The VHS Hofer Land can be accessed via Graben. The Jean-Paul-Gymnasium can still be reached via Karolinenstraße. Parents are asked to drop their children off at a suitable place, e.g. at the Schießhäuschen car park.

Stadtwerke Hof is investing around three million euros in a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply as part of the project. A district heating pipeline around one kilometre long will be laid from the combined heat and power plant on the Stadtwerke site towards the city centre, Ludwigstraße - a central basis for the future supply of numerous public and private buildings, including the town hall, schools and residential buildings. At the same time, the street lighting and power cables are being modernised and three contaminated buildings belonging to the hospital foundation in the Sigmundsgraben 8-12 area are being demolished.

Roadworks hotline

From Monday afternoon, 18 August, the city of Hof will be setting up a roadworks hotline to answer questions about closures, diversions and route recommendations.

Telephone: 09281 / 815 - 1426

Traffic measures

  • Traffic supervision: The traffic supervision team carries out checks on traffic flow. This means that diversions can be adapted to the actual conditions.
  • Police checks: Some streets, such as Klostertor, are only passable for residents. The police will check this regularly.
  • No fibre optic work: No fibre optic work will be permitted in the entire area of the planned diversions.
  • The car park at Jean-Paul-Gymnasium will be closed.
  • Access to facilities: The retirement home at Unteres Tor will remain accessible with restrictions.
  • Pedestrian and cycle traffic: Pedestrians will not be hindered in the entire construction site area. Cyclists can pass through the streets when dismounted.

Car parks

The Lionhalle and Schießhäusschen car parks will remain usable. For residents and visitors to the Sigmundsgraben urban renewal car park, access via Karolinenstraße will be maintained. The Jean-Paul-Gymnasium car park is closed.

Early information and cooperation

The construction work has been announced for weeks via signs on the motorway and the major access roads. In addition, the city of Hof was and is in contact with the local haulage companies, including Amazon, in order to minimise heavy goods traffic in Hof. The universities were also informed in order to draw attention to the upcoming closures in good time. Stadtwerke Hof is the developer of the project. Details on construction phases and schedules will be published by Stadtwerke Hof. The city of Hof will also provide regular updates on construction progress and any changes to the diversions.

Significance of the measure

The new district heating pipeline is an important step towards a sustainable energy supply and contributes to reducing the use of fossil fuels. In the long term, it will improve the air quality in the city and create the conditions for future projects - including the upcoming complete reconstruction of the Friedrich Ebert Bridge.
