Lessingstraße/Sigmundsgraben junction closed

Major construction site: Stadtwerke Hof expands district heating towards the city centre

Stadtwerke Hof announces:

Stadtwerke Hof is currently investing around 3 million euros in a sustainable and climate-friendly energy supply for Hof with the largest single project in the district heating sector.

As part of the project, a district heating pipeline around one kilometre long is being built, running from the combined heat and power plant on the Stadtwerke site towards the city centre - a key milestone for the future supply of numerous public and private buildings, including the town hall, schools and residential buildings.

Following the successful start of construction on Unterkotzauer Weg, the next important construction phase will follow from 18 August 2025: the crossing work at Sigmundsgraben/Lessingstraße. This work will require a full closure of the Sigmundsgraben until probably the end of November.

Despite the restrictions caused by the construction site, the outlook is positive: the new pipeline will bring Hof a good deal closer to an independent, sustainable heat supply.

What is being done?

  • Laying new district heating pipes from Unterkotzauer Weg via Lessingstraße into Sigmundsgraben towards the city centre
  • Modernisation of the street lighting and power cables
  • Dismantling of three contaminated buildings belonging to the Hof Hospital Foundation in the Sigmundsgraben 8-12 area
  • Preparation for the connection of central buildings (e.g. town hall, Jean-Paul-Gymnasium, residential buildings) to the district heating network

Why is this measure important?

  • It is a prerequisite for a climate-friendly, regional and future-proof heat supply
  • It improves the air quality in the urban area in the long term

Particularly affected: Lessingstraße/Sigmundsgraben junction area

The first section of the Sigmundsgraben roadworks will particularly affect the Lessingstraße/Sigmundsgraben junction. From 18 August, there will be significant restrictions in the flow of traffic for a period of around four weeks - probably until the end of September.

This will change during the junction work:
  • Lessingstraße will only be accessible in the direction of the city centre. The lane travelling out of the city (towards Marktkauf) will remain closed for the entire four-week intersection works.

  • Turning left and right into Schützenweg (Scherdelsberg) from Lessingstraße is still possible.

  • Coming from Schützenweg, only right turns in the direction of the city are permitted.

  • Access to Unterkotzauer Weg is still only possible via Seligenweg or Schloßweg .

Access for residents and car park users remains possible

Despite the full closure of Sigmundsgraben, access via Karolinenstraße will remain possible for residents and car park users of the public car park of Stadterneuerung Hof (Sigmundsgraben).

A corresponding sign will be displayed on site. The access road will be kept open during the entire construction period as long as construction progress allows.
