Flagging for Labor Day
On May 1, 1886, there were strikes by industrial workers in the USA, which were bloodily suppressed by the police. In 1889, the socialist "Second International" declared May 1 a "day of struggle for the working class".
After an initial one-off attempt in 1919, May 1 has been a public holiday in Germany since 1933. While the National Socialists used May Day to try and win over the workers' movement, it has been a public holiday for working people since 1946. Rallies and speeches by trade unionists are intended to carry their concerns into politics.
Municipal buildings are therefore flagged on May Day.
