Commemorative weeks "35 years of the opening of the border and the fall of the Wall"
The city of Hof is preparing for an important anniversary this year: "35 years of the opening of the border and the fall of the Berlin Wall". The city of Hof played a role of national importance in the course of these historic events. After all, Hof was the first port of call in what was then the West for many people from the GDR after the border was opened. To this day, many people associate intense and positive memories of this time with the great hospitality of the people of Hof, who achieved historic things back then. The arrival of the Prague trains on October 1, 1989 was a particularly important date in Hof's recent history.
This historical role of the city of Hof on the way to German unity will be the focus of the commemorative weeks for "35 years of the opening of the border and the fall of the Wall". A wide variety of events will take place from the end of September to mid-November. In addition to the city of Hof, institutions and associations are also invited to register their activities with the city. All kinds of events are welcome, including lectures, exhibitions, theater performances, film screenings, sporting events, workshops and panel discussions. The city of Hof is also looking for contemporary witnesses who played a formative role during this period.
The city of Hof is planning to publish a comprehensive program booklet that will bundle and present all the activities to mark the anniversary in addition to the city events. This will commemorate this historically significant event for Hof in a worthy and varied manner.
"The Peaceful Revolution and the opening of the border 35 years ago were milestones in German history that brought about profound changes and new opportunities, especially in Hof," says Mayor Eva Döhla. "Our commemorative weeks are intended to highlight the significance of these events and at the same time focus on the diverse experiences and stories of the people in our region."
