Hof as a hinge between the Franconian Forest and the Fichtel Mountains

Franconian Forest Nature Park

The vacation destination in northern Bavaria is just right for active guests. Whether hiking, cycling, trail running or trekking, you can take it easy or really get going. After an eventful day, there are numerous places to stop for refreshments, which invite you to end your vacation day in comfort. Urban hustle and bustle and anonymity are not to be found here. On the contrary, guests are welcomed here with Franconian coziness and unmistakable charm.

In addition to hikes through the natural paradise of Höllental, the spa town of Bad Steben with its spa park, columned walkway, thermal baths with a wide range of facilities and the state-owned Bad Steben casino are particularly inviting places to visit in the Franconian Forest.

Fichtelgebirge

The Fichtelgebirge can be divided mainly into two scenically very different natural areas: The High Fichtelgebirge, with its highest elevations Schneeberg (1053 m) and Ochsenkopf (1024 m), encloses the landscape of the Selb-Wunsiedler plateau, also known as Sechsämterland, as an open mountain wall of granite. Thereby the whole mountain range forms the shape of a horseshoe opened to the northeast.

The entire mountain range of the High Fichtelgebirge is covered by an almost completely contiguous forest area, which stretches from the Kornberg in the northeast over the Schneeberg and Ochsenkopf massifs to the Kösseine in the southwest. The meager soil conditions and especially the cool and humid climate were unsuitable for agriculture. Therefore it was difficult to establish settlements in the mountainous areas. The settlements in the High Fichtel Mountains like Bischofsgrün, Fichtelberg or Warmensteinach were founded because of the mining industry. Like islands in a sea of trees, they lie as clearing islands in the large forests.
