Day of Remembrance for the Victims of National Socialism
The Day of Remembrance of the Victims of National Socialism on January 27 has been a day of remembrance in Germany since 1996. This date commemorates the liberation of the Auschwitz extermination camp by the Red Army of the Soviet Union on January 27, 1945. More than one million people had been murdered in Auschwitz since 1941. Today, "Auschwitz" is interpreted as a symbol for all types of racist and political persecution under National Socialism. January 27 was declared International Holocaust Remembrance Day by the United Nations in 2005.
