OXG relies on an open fibre optic network

The go-ahead has been given for the expansion of further fibre optic infrastructure in Hof. Following an intensive planning phase, OXG is starting the broadband expansion for around 15,000 households. The construction project will create a modern telecommunications infrastructure without residents having to switch to fibre optics immediately. Existing telecommunications connections will be retained and can continue to be used. OXG is thus accompanying Hof step by step into the digital future.
Mayor Eva Döhla: "With the fibre optic expansion, we are sending an important signal for the future viability of our city. Today, digital infrastructure is just as crucial as roads or electricity - it enables modern working, learning and living. The fact that the expansion is being carried out without pre-marketing and free of charge for citizens shows that we are not just building, but taking responsibility: This is not just about building, but about taking responsibility. I would like to thank OXG for their partnership and am delighted that Hof digital continues to grow."
Franziska Christau, Head of OXG Municipal Management: "The OXG fibre optic expansion in Hof has started. With the expansion, we are creating a high-performance infrastructure that forms the basis for economic growth, modern living and working as well as forward-looking innovations. The fibre-optic expansion is free of charge for all owners and residents right into their own four walls and without pre-marketing. We are particularly proud to be building an open network that allows a free choice of provider and product."
OXG is building an FTTH network in Hof. FTTH stands for "Fibre To The Home" and refers to the modern connection method in which the fibre optic cable is no longer only laid to the network distributor or to the basement, but to the four walls of the home. In contrast to conventional Internet connections such as DSL and VDSL, FTTH expansion completely dispenses with the classic copper cable. The new fibre optic technology therefore enables transmission speeds of up to 1 Gbit/s and more.
Owners also benefit from a potential increase in value, as a modern fibre optic connection significantly increases the attractiveness and future viability of the property. In times of growing digital requirements, a fibre optic connection can therefore be a decisive advantage when renting or selling.
The expansion in Hof will take place regardless of whether a pre-marketing quota is reached. The infrastructure expansion will take place in several stages and begins with the construction of the distribution network. The distribution network, which will be laid on public land in the footpath and cycle path area, has a total length of around 75 kilometres. The fibre optic cable is routed underground from the property boundary to the house and then to each residential unit. Finally, the property is connected to the network.
OXG is building an open fibre optic network. Thanks to the open access approach, owners and residents of a residential unit can decide for themselves which of the regionally available providers they would like to use for their Internet access. In addition to Vodafone, other Internet providers will also market end customer products via the OXG infrastructure in the future.
The only prerequisite for the fibre optic connection is the consent of the owners. With this consent, it is also possible to switch to a fibre optic connection at a later date in a simple and uncomplicated manner. Existing DSL and cable contracts can therefore continue to be used.
