More fibre optic connections to come
Telekom has won the public tender issued by the city of Hof for the fibre optic expansion. This is the third and final broadband funding programme in the city area. 78 addresses in Eppenreuth, Lausenhof, Osseck, Pirk, Quetschen and Unterkotzau will be connected to the fibre optic network. This means that the last "white spots" in the urban area are disappearing. These are connections with an Internet speed of less than 30 megabits per second (Mbit/s). The new fibre optic network offers up to 1,000 Mbit/s. This means that home Wi-Fi is so stable and reliable that several people can learn and work, surf, stream and play digitally at the same time. The expansion should be completed by the end of December 2028. Deutsche Telekom will lay around 50 kilometres of fibre optic cable to the home. In addition, 13 new network distributors will be installed. The first customers will have access to the network from mid-2027. The current project is being funded 50 per cent by the federal government, 40 per cent by the state of Bavaria and 10 per cent by the city of Hof itself.
"The fibre optic connection makes our city an attractive place to live and work for all generations. The modern network ensures our quality of life and economic development in Hof and the surrounding area. Inaddition, a fibre optic connection increases the value of a property," said Eva Döhla, Mayor of Hof, at the signing of the contract.
"We're delighted that we were able to impress with our offer," says Richard Liedel, Regional Manager at Deutsche Telekom. "We want to get started now. Our aim is to complete the project quickly and with as little disruption as possible for the citizens, which is why we are working closely with the city of Hof. Transparency and professional construction site management are our top priorities."
Fibre optic is only possible together
In order for the citizens of Hof to benefit from a fibre optic connection, Telekom needs the support of the property owners. They must agree to connect the building to the new network. All residents in the expansion area will be contacted by post by the city of Hof together with Telekom and informed about the next steps.
Those who live in rented accommodation can also apply to Deutsche Telekom for a fibre optic connection by contacting their landlord. They will then discuss where the fibre optic cable will enter the house and how it will be routed.
The local authority and Telekom are planning to have sales staff at the front door to advise residents on behalf of Telekom. The customer advisors will wear clothing with the Telekom logo. They can identify themselves with a photo ID and a letter of authorisation from Telekom. The employee can be identified by calling 0800 3309765. Why it is worth switching to fibre optics
- Compared to copper lines, fibre optic cables enable significantly higher transmission rates. This means that huge amounts of data can be uploaded and downloaded at lightning speed via a fibre optic connection.
- Fibre optics enable the most reliable and fastest connection compared to other transmission paths. This gives customers a future-proof connection for digital learning and working, streaming and gaming, all at the same time.
- Fibre optic is less susceptible to interference and more robust against external influences such as water. Especially for older people with a home emergency call, a fibre optic connection offers more protection against possible interference.
- Fibre optics is good for the climate because less energy is consumed than in the existing copper network.
- A fibre optic connection increases the value of a property. If the house, flat or business is to be sold or rented, a fast and reliable Internet connection is a good selling point. Fibre optic is the best infrastructure for the coming decades.
