Jean-Paul-Gymnasium creates audio guide for Museum Bayerisches Vogtland

The Jean-Paul-Gymnasium receives the P-Seminar prize for the Stadt.Land.Museum project.

P-Seminar Prize for Jean-Paul-Gymnasium

The P-Seminar "Stadt.Land.Museum" from the Jean-Paul-Gymnasium in Hof, led by Kathrin Rau, has been awarded the "P-Seminar Prize" by the Bavarian Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs. A total of 27 P-Seminars from all over Bavaria were awarded prizes in the joint competition organized by the Bavarian State Ministry of Education and Cultural Affairs, the Bavarian Business Association (vbw), the Bildungswerk der Bayerischen Wirtschaft e. V. (bbw) and the Eberhard von Kuenheim Foundation. According to the ministry, the selection process focuses in particular on concept, implementation and results. Four state winners will be chosen from the 27 regional winners in March.

An audio guide for the museum

The aim of the seminar was to develop an audio guide to the personal favorite objects of the 13 students. Together with the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland and the regional radio station extra-radio, an audio guide was created that enables visitors to discover the objects in the City History, Refugees & Displaced Persons and Natural History departments in a completely new way. The audio guide can be conveniently downloaded to a smartphone via the museum's Wi-Fi, providing free information in German and English.

"The pupils have brought a breath of fresh air to a long-awaited project and actively contributed to the museum finally being able to offer an audio guide in two languages," says Dr. Magdalena Bayreuther, Director of the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland.

Researching and writing the audio guide texts as well as comprehensive voice training by BR presenter Clemens Nicol marked the start of the project. Five main speakers were selected and additionally trained by speaker Ralf Hocke from Theater Hof. The other pupils contributed the original sounds in which they explained the choice of their favorite object. The English texts were translated and recorded by a native speaker, with pupils responsible for the quotes on object selection.

Under the direction of Sabine Hager, Managing Director of extra-radio, the texts were recorded in German and English in the radio station's recording studio. "A project like this only works if everyone involved contributes their core competencies and coordinates well. That worked brilliantly here," says Sabine Hager.

Celebration at the school

At a small ceremony at Jean-Paul-Gymnasium, all pupils received an individual certificate from Dr. Jasmin Stöcker, employee of the Ministerial Representative for Grammar Schools in Upper Franconia, and Stefan Klein, Headmaster of Jean-Paul-Gymnasium. Stöcker emphasized the close link between the school context and the external partner, which is the main feature of a P-Seminar. The content that is taught at school should be applied in practice, thus providing initial insights into everyday working life. The P-Seminar at Jean-Paul-Gymnasium saw exceptionally close cooperation between the school, radio and museum.

"We particularly liked the fact that the result of the seminar, i.e. the audio guide, is actually used by the museum and doesn't just end up in a drawer, as is the case with some other seminars. By involving extra-radio, the pupils were able to gain an in-depth insight into the work of a media company, which is exactly what P-Seminars are all about," says Dr. Jasmin Stöcker. This aspect was also emphasized by Patrick Püttner from the Bavarian Business Association, who came especially for the award ceremony.

Presentation of the audio guide

The presentation of the audio guide will take place on Wednesday, March 6, 2024, at 6:30 pm at the Museum Bayerisches Vogtland. All interested parties are cordially invited to attend.

The project was made possible by a generous donation of 3,800 euros from the Rotary Club Hof-Bayern. Further support was provided by the "Make your radio" funding program.
