Friendly soccer match between Plauen and Hof
As part of the celebrations to mark the 35th anniversary of the fall of the Berlin Wall, the two traditional teams of SpVgg Bayern Hof and VFC Plauen will play a friendly match on Friday, May 2, 2025. The match kicks off at 18:30 at the Grüne Au stadium. Both cities - and both clubs - have maintained a friendly relationship for many years. Last year, the two teams met for a match in Plauen, which the Hofer delegation won 2:0. Much more important than the result, however, were the many friendly conversations between the Saxon and Bavarian athletes afterwards. What many people don't know: As early as 1898, a match between the Allgemeiner Turnverein Hof and a team from Plauen took place in Hof, which the team from Hof won 7:0. Four years later, a team under the name Vogtländischer Fußballclub played against Spielvereinigung ATV Hof (0:3). However, this team never appeared again, according to Vogtland historian Dr. Andreas Krone. Over the years, soccer teams from Plauen and Hof have repeatedly played each other.
This Friday, many soccer fans from the region are likely to get their money's worth. Catalin Popa, a former Champions League player, will even be playing for Plauen. Ingo Walther, who played in the second division for many years, will also lace up his boots. Florian Ascherl, Erwin Okraffka, Volker Köcher, Daniel Micklisch and Martin Rebhan, among others, have confirmed their attendance on the Hof side. The team will be coached by Herbert Börner, Peter Reifenrath and Jürgen Gahn. After the match, the partnership will be celebrated with a meal together in the stadium restaurant.
