Green spaces

The green spaces department of the city of Hof looks after numerous public "green" areas: in parking lots and streets, along watercourses, in schoolyards and other municipal facilities, as well as the municipal cemeteries and eco-account areas. The municipal cemeteries and eco-account areas are also taken care of.

Colorful alternating plantings to enhance the cityscape with spring bloomers and summer flowers adorn small areas in the city center and at prominent locations in the urban area. In this way, the city of Hof also fulfills the wishes/suggestions that were put forward by the petition for a referendum "Save the bees" in 2019.

Parks & Gardens

87 official green spaces, including the well-known Bürgerpark Theresienstein and Untreusee, contribute to the attractiveness of the city and enrich the leisure activities in Hof with their diverse recreational, play and sports facilities.

Green spaces often serve as an atmospheric backdrop for events, festivals and celebrations.

However, green spaces are not only recreational areas for people in the city, but also provide valuable habitats for animals and plants and have a positive effect on the urban climate.

To ensure that as many people as possible, some of whom visit the parks for very different reasons, can enjoy Hof's green spaces, a green space statute is in force that contains a number of rules for visiting the green spaces for the benefit of the general public.

The gardening and construction supervision of the green spaces is carried out by the Green Spaces Department. New designs are usually developed in cooperation with the urban planning department and with the involvement of the public.

Trees in the city

Hof's cityscape is enriched by around 4,500 street trees and roughly the same number of trees in green spaces and other municipal facilities.

As recently as spring 2020, for example, 500 young German oaks were planted at Lindenbühl.

For safety reasons, tree inspections and maintenance measures are carried out regularly. The city strives to maintain and develop the tree population. To this end, numerous trees are planted every year.

Currently, the city of Hof is participating in the research project "City Green 2021" of the Bavarian State Institute for Viticulture and Horticulture (LWG) Veitshöchheim, in the framework of which new promising tree species are being examined for their suitability with regard to the climate change problem.

Tree Protection Ordinance

Hof has a tree protection ordinance, according to which certain trees are protected: Deciduous trees and silver firs (Abies alba) from a trunk circumference of 80cm, measured at a height of one meter or, in the case of multi-stemmed woody plants, from a trunk circumference of 50cm per individual trunk.

If you wish to cut down a tree protected under the ordinance or prune it to a considerable extent, an application for permission must be submitted to the Environment Department.

In advance, it is advisable to clarify the permissibility with the green spaces department as the technical department. Please arrange an appointment with us for an inspection.
