Shaping climate protection

Hof on the way to climate neutrality in 2040

On January 25, 2021, the city council adopted the Integrated Climate Protection Concept (IKSK) and the implementation of the catalog of measures. In an energy policy mission statement, the city set itself the goal of achieving climate neutrality by 2040. This can only be achieved if the administration, citizens and businesses work together.

Of the 59 measures in the ICSK, 13 have currently been completed or established, 36 are in the process and 10 have not yet been started. This means that 83 percent of the measures in the climate protection concept are already in the process. A medium-term period must be expected from the initial discussions on planning and applying for funding to the start of implementation - especially for construction measures. Many of the climate protection measures are permanent tasks and therefore ongoing.

Nationwide long-term study on the private CO2 footprint

Everyone can contribute to climate protection. But is that enough for a climate-neutral life? Can this even work in the near future? Which measures are effective and which are suitable for our current living situation?

The KliX³ project is conducting the first nationwide long-term study on theCO2 balance of private households in collaboration with the Federal Environment Agency and the University of Freiburg. Research is being carried out into how climate-neutral living can be achieved, which climate protection measures are typically implemented and which obstacles and successes can be seen in everyday practice.

Hof as a pilot municipality

Hof is one of ten pilot municipalities and is calling on the people of Hof to take part in the study.

Participants can expect a toolbox for creating a personal climate plan, a guide "Ways to a climate-neutral life" and a three-part online course with plenty of space for sharing experiences. Once a year, participants use the Federal Environment Agency's calculator to determine their own carbon footprint.

This provides citizens with a motivating climate protection package. At the same time, the municipality also contributes to gaining knowledge in the field of climate protection and supports research.

Kick-off event

The kick-off event for the project will take place on March 5, 2024 from 6 to 8 p.m. at the VHS Hofer Land . The dates for the online workshops will be announced in good time. Participation is free of charge.

Registration is now possible at www.klix3.de or by email to kontakt(at)klix3.de.

Conceptual basis

The content of KliX³ is based on the "Triad for the Climate" developed by the "3 fürs Klima" association with the elements 1) creating a carbon footprint with the Federal Environment Agency's calculator, 2) reducing the footprint with small and large measures in everyday life and 3) increasing the handprint with commitment, climate-friendly compensation and financial investment for climate protection.

KliX³ concentrates on filtering out the next possible, relevant small and large steps. KliX³ focuses on "big points" with great leverage and teaches serenity, especially when it comes to "peanuts" that have comparatively little impact on the climate. The triad provides climate-committed people with a tried-and-tested tool for combining fun and enjoyment with effectiveness in climate protection. The gamification approach and the opportunity to exchange ideas make it fun to apply the scientifically sound suggestions to your own life - from "just do it" tips to ambitious measures. "We have underpinned the options for action presented with findings from environmental protection psychology to help you overcome any inner resistance," explains Luzia Walsch, psychologist and project manager of the municipal campaign at KliX³.

The basic offers from KliX³

Contributing to the long-term study: Using the Federal Environment Agency's carbon calculator to determine their own carbon balanceonce a year provides participants with a basis for finding their way through the jungle of climate protection measures. Based on the current status, we look at which short or medium-term measures make sense and can be implemented. Participants also have the opportunity to find out more about the background to the calculator and the progress of the study.

Take part in the toolbox: KliX³ offers the opportunity to create a personal climate plan for more climate protection in everyday life. There are many ideas, but where should you start? The KliX³ toolbox playfully guides participants on the path to a climate-neutral life. Instead of juggling many loose ends, they can use this online toolbox to create their own personal climate plan in six modules.

Learn more in the online workshop: Participants are also invited to take part in a three-part online workshop. Each module takes a closer look at one aspect of the "triad" of creating a balance sheet, reducing the footprint and expanding the handprint. The focus of these workshops in a fixed group is the exchange of ideas: because climate protection is teamwork. What's more, climate protection is more fun together. There is also plenty of room for personal questions.

About the nationwide KliX³ project

KliX³ is funded by the National Climate Initiative with funds from the Federal Ministry for Economic Affairs and Climate Protection. For the first time, KliX³ is setting up a nationwide carbon calculator panelin which participants can balance their carbon emissionsannually and thus keep track of their climate protection successes over time. Klix³ stands for "Climate-neutral living in city X". KliX³ was initiated by the association "3 fürs Klima" (www.3fuersklima.de) and KlimAktiv (www.klimaktiv.de).

3 fürs Klima is a non-profit association with the aim of creating and spreading awareness and knowledge about effective individual action options for climate protection in accordance with the Paris goal and has attracted nationwide attention and saved over 20,000 tons ofCO2 in 2021 with the climate bet (www.dieklimawette.de).

KlimAktiv gemeinnützige Gesellschaft zur Förderung des Klimaschutzes mbH develops software for carbon accounting for companies, municipalities and other organizations and enables its partners to actively protect the climate by raising awareness of their ow carbon footprint.

Climate protection measures

of the integrated climate protection concept

Almost all of the climate protection measures in the ICSK are permanent tasks and must be constantly driven forward in order to achieve the goal of climate neutrality by 2040. The city's budget situation is currently a limiting factor for the implementation of measures. As climate protection is unfortunately not yet a mandatory task for local authorities, this means that so-called "voluntary services" have to be cut or eliminated in this area.

Established climate protection measures:

  • Creation of a climate mission statement (energy policy mission statement)
  • Networking with other cities in the European Metropolitan Region (EMN)
  • Networking with experts, research and development
  • Accession of the city of Hof to the "Pact for Sustainable Procurement of the EMN"
  • Participation in the annual "Earth Hour"
  • Participation in the "Wohnen Bauen Ambiente" trade fair
  • Creation of a solar potential register
  • Information events as part of the "Haus und Hof" series of events (e.g. heating renewal and advice on subsidies)
  • Energy advice for citizens
  • Conversion of the municipal car fleet to e-drive
  • Creation of a charging infrastructure concept
  • Provision of target group-specific climate literature in the public bookcase
  • Establishment of an environmental and climate council with specialist working groups
  • Information events for small and medium-sized enterprises and the retail sector
  • Stimulus and advice for the expansion of photovoltaics
  • Initiation and coordination of fast-charging hubs
  • Technical input for sustainable urban development and urban land-use planning
  • Preparation of energy management for municipal properties
  • Cross-departmental, factual contributions, opinions and assessments
  • Advancing sustainable procurement in the administration and at administration-related facilities

Currently in preparation:

  • The creation of an interdisciplinary climate team in the administration
  • Organization and implementation of professional measure controlling
  • Introduction of climate adaptation management and creation of an adaptation concept for the entire city as part of the integrated urban development concept (ISEK 2040)
  • Preparation of a sustainability resolution for the administration
  • Holding climate protection and sustainability training courses for municipal employees
  • Creation of a heat action plan
  • Development of a municipal heat plan as part of the integrated urban development concept (ISEK 2040)
  • Updating the greenhouse gas balance for the city as a whole
