The Saale and its Meadows

The River influenced the Hofer history in a big way....

The breweries found good conditions for their fermentation cellars at the watershed of the river; they took advantage of the water power. The Saale served as water supplier for the textile industry as well, which came in handy.

The Saale, one of the most important tributaries of the Elbe, springs from the Spruce Mountains just like the rivers Naab, Eger and Main. To be precise it springs in 707 meters above sea level from the northwestern slope of the Großer Waldstein. The river joins the Elbe before the gates of Magdeburg near the small town of Barby after about 427 meters.

For the people of Hof the Saale is just a leisure river that only becomes navigable in its later course but it is used in different ways already. It’s the walkers and cyclists that spend their free time in the renaturated meadows of the Saale and on its beautiful nearby tracks.

The visitors are lead to the bank of the Saale by Johannes Peter Hölzinger’s flashy track object. The twelve meter high poles open up like a blossom and seem to unblock the way. The meadows of the Saale were upvalued by the Bavarian Landesgartenschau in 1994 as you have to pass through the former Gartenschau area to get to the Theresienstein.

You pass idyllic and even urban housing areas near the Saale and at the foot of the Theresienstein – only about 100 meters away from the town hall and yet in the countryside.

The Saale takes a sharp bend and that’s where the Theresienstein rises in Hof’s north. The extensive park has always been a popular destination about which even Jean Paul and Goethe once wrote.
