The Hofer Town Hall

One of the most popular landmarks in Hof

With an ideal location, with regard to urban-planning, at the junction of Klosterstraße and the broad Ludwigstraße, the town hall influences the face of the town a lot, especially together with St. Michael’s Church just across the street.

In 1560 the Hofer town hall – that could only be distinguished by its size and the clock from other buildings – was in bad shape. Having been damaged badly during the siege in 1553, the building was given to the citizens by the local lord, margrave Georg Friedrich.

The new building, which was developed in 1563, was influenced by the Renaissance style. It was built according to the plans of Nikolaus Hofmann from Halle on the Saale, one of the most important builders of his time. He is also responsible for the beautiful city hall of Schweinfurt, for example, as well as impressive buildings in Zwickau and Rothenburg on the Tauber.

Back then the Hofer town hall was not only seat of the town council. It rather had more than one purpose: on the first floor were a bakery, the “Büttelei” and a common trading post for Hofer craftsmen. On the second floor were the council, court and torture chambers and on the third floor was a lounge for formal dances, prestigious weddings and performances.

The town hall was renovated repeatedly due to numerous fires and thus is probably unique in its plurality of styles. The observant visitor may notice remarkable details.

Climbing the 152 steps of the town hall tower and enjoying the beautiful view over Hof is always a special experience.
