Public transport

Before 1901 a horse-drawn omnibus went from Hof’s Vorstadt as far as the new main station. In the year 1900 the town council decided to introduce electric trams built by Siemens & Halske in Berlin. To the great delight of the people of Hof, the electric tram went into operation on 5th August 1901.

From 1920 the tramway was run by the municipal authorities, however two years later financial reasons forced them to close the line. On 1st October 1924 an omnibus company was founded, which was taken over by the town authorities on 1st May 1925. This was the beginning of the corporation’s own bus service.

Bushaltestelle

At present 30 buses are deployed on 12 bus routes. From 1988 on, the municipal bus company operated in co-operation with a private company Verkehrsbetriebe Bachstein GmbH (VB) on some of these routes. Then in 1998, the two jointly formed a company of their own: HofBus GmbH, which since then has been responsible for all public transport by bus within Hof.

Public transport in Hof has become more attractive thanks to innovations like ticket printers in the buses or the possibility to purchase tickets without having to use cash. Another innovation is the linking up of various bus companies and the Deutsche Bahn. The tickets of all the operators involved are accepted in the HofBus buses and passengers can change onto one of the HofBus routes free of charge. Besides radio-operated traffic lights ensure that public transport is speedy and given preference over the rest of the traffic.
